Resilience & Transformation Through Crisis and Recovery

Many industries have been heavily battered by dampened demand, closures and layoffs this past year. How have those workforces weathered the storm — and what happens next? During this half-day virtual event, chief learning officers and practitioners from some of the hardest-hit areas of the workforce will discuss how they have struggled to remain resilient — how they are keeping learning effective amid crisis; how reskilling and cross-skilling workers to fill gaps has grown as a priority for all organizations; the role that outskilling programs can play in our current environment and in the future; and the challenges learning leaders and learners themselves face as closures are lifted and demand returns.

10:05 – 11:05 am CST: Panel Discussion: Keeping Learning Alive Amid Extreme Hardship

No person or organization has been immune to the difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hotels, airlines, and the tourism and travel sectors, for instance, were hit especially hard, struggling with mass layoffs, budget cuts and new training challenges related to sanitation efforts and personal safety. In this panel, learning practitioners from some of the harder-hit sectors of the workforce will discuss how reskilling and cross-skilling workers has become essential to survival and future success.

11:05 – 11:10 am CST: Coffee Break

Grab a coffee, take five or explore the Breakfast Club platform.

11:10 – 11:40 am CST: FASTtalk: SkillsDNA™ — The Goldilocks Solution for Talent Development

Stacey Boyle, Ph.D.
Competitive advantage comes from having the right mix of skills to execute strategy. CLOs and talent development leaders have to balance keeping their competitive skills intact while also staying current, in a complex and fast-changing skills marketplace. Thus, they need a skills solution or architecture that is “just right” for them.

When seeking a skills architecture, organizations generally face two options: buy or build. If you buy, you’re continually trying to adapt generalized skills to your organization that aren’t a perfect fit. As a consequence, you lose some elements of uniqueness, marginalizing your competitive edge. If you try to build a custom skills architecture, it can evolve into a costly, rigorous endeavor, making it nearly impossible to maintain, especially with the brief shelf-life of today’s skills. So, a total custom solution may not seem like the perfect fit either.

EdCast is supplementing the buy vs. build choices by providing the perfect solution with SkillsDNA™. EdCast’s SkillsDNA™ uses AI and machine learning to generate both curated and curatable skills that are just right for your organization. This solution makes identifying, measuring and filling strategic skill gaps relatively effortless, thereby maximizing your competitive edge.In this session, we will introduce SkillsDNA™, the skilling solution that is just right for many organizations, including, perhaps, yours as well?

11:10 – 11:40 am CST: How To Drive Transformative Change During Crisis
Ryan Laverty

How do you train in times of crisis? In this session, Ryan will share how organizations have taken a research-backed approach to driving transformative behavior change in difficult circumstances.
Speaker: Ryan Laverty, Co-founder & President, Arist

11:40 – 12:10 pm CST: Think Tank Challenge

Organizations were burdened by unprecedented financial hardship and mass layoffs during the pandemic. Using the knowledge and insights you gained from this morning’s panel, develop a cross-skilling or reskilling program to help train your employees to learn skills and capabilities that are essential to the future success of your organization.

  • Describe the program. Is it a cross-skilling or reskilling program?
  • How do you establish buy-in from leadership?
  • Is your leadership team involved?
  • How do you plan to train your remote employees?
  • How will you measure the program’s effectiveness?
12:10 – 12:15 pm CST: Coffee Break

Grab a coffee, take five or explore the Breakfast Club platform.

12:15 – 12:30 pm CST: A Conversation with Rose Sheldon

Rose Sheldon
Rose Sheldon, director of enterprise learning and development at Allstate, sits down for a 15-minute chat with Chief Learning Officer’s editor-in-chief, Ashley St. John, about supporting employees as they build skills and capabilities for continuing workplace success, and outskilling them in order to stay agile as they re-enter the job market.

12:30 – 12:35 pm CST: Coffee Break

Grab a coffee, take five or explore the Breakfast Club platform.

12:35 – 1:35 pm CST: Panel Discussion: Outskilling for the Future of Work

At the start of 2020, formal outskilling programs were relatively few. But the global public health crisis may be speeding up their adoption, as organizations work to counteract the far-reaching negative impacts of mass layoffs and displacement due to automation and to take more responsibility for the welfare and employability of their people. In this panel, learning practitioners will discuss the growth of outskilling practices in their organizations in order to equip employees with the skills they need to be competitive in the job market.

1:35 – 1:40 pm CST: Coffee Break

Grab a coffee, take five or explore the Breakfast Club platform.

1:40 – 2:10 pm CST: A Skills Strategy is Exactly What You Need Right Now

Janice Burns
Skills, not credentials, are quickly becoming the new currency of work. Why? With technology advancing and unprecedented economic, social and environmental disruptions unfolding, a workforce with the skills to meet the moment can help create real value for your evolving business, which means people should be hired based on what they can do, not what their credentials say they know. It means developing people so they can perform and grow. You’ll learn how to:

  • Create a skill-building environment
  • Optimize the impact of your efforts
  • Analyze and shape your skill landscape using skill data
1:40 – 2:10 pm CST: Encouraging Resiliency in Your Teams During Times of Change

Kimberly Schneiderman
Join Randstad RiseSmart’s Kimberly Schneiderman, Senior Practice Development Manager to find out how to encourage resiliency in your teams during times of change. Learn how to define and prepare for the stages of change, transition and resilience. Master how to manage through change and how to build resilience for your team and yourself. Discover common behaviors remaining employees exhibit after a layoff or reduction in force and how to create a plan for addressing the needs of remaining employees and managers after a reduction. And much more.

2:10 – 2:30 pm CST: Networking / Closing Address

Join our editor in chief, Ashley St. John, to close out the day.
